ML Question - Will you ever make a new music album with Shania Twain?
Mutt Lange - Not likely. That chapter in my life is probably permanently closed. We have no goals left to achieve. We were fortuitous beyond our dreams.
ML Question - How did you know Shania Twain would become such a phenomenal musical artist?
Mutt Lange - I knew she had the potential and talent, but not the right sound. Of course, I never thought it would work to the degree it actually did.
ML Question - Are you recognized by people when you go out in public?
Mutt Lange - Not really. It's rare. Even when I was with Shania, nobody really knew who I was. How many record producers, movie executives or book editors do you know by name?
ML Question - None. Excellent point. Are you shocked that the Back In Black album from AC DC, which you helped create, continues to sell over 1 (one) million copies each year?
Mutt Lange - I don't know why, but it's not something I think about.
ML Question - Why does Angus Young of AC/DC keep the basic sound they had in the early 1980's? They don't change.
Mutt Lange - Angus has a certain vision for his music, which works for him.
ML Question - How do you write enchanting melodic hooks for songs that fans will actually pay money to buy?
Mutt Lange - There's no secret. It's difficult to create music that people will listen to over and over again. If I knew what it was all about, every song I produce would be a hit single.
ML Question - Do you still have contact with music artists you worked with in the past?
Mutt Lange - No. We have separate lives. Some of them believe I was a merciless tyrant in the studio and obsessed with absolute perfection with each song. Some of those albums took several years to complete. They've seen enough of me for one life time.
ML Question - Fortunately, you continue to become more and more ancient yet you seem to be able to keep your finger on the pulse of the latest music trends. How do you do it?
Mutt Lange - I listen to a wide variety of music. Basically, every genre is in my collection. However, sometimes when you're lucky in life you can make the trends happen. It's always by accident and chance, but it happens.
ML Question - What's the biggest surprise in life so far?
Mutt Lange - When your searching for the fortune and fame, you need to avoid notoriety. There's no upside in being well known. You need to always be under the radar like a hidden shadow. I learned this early in my career.
ML Question - Will you ever retire from the entertainment industry?
Mutt Lange - As long as somebody has an interest in working with me and I think their sound is something I can work with, then I don't see retirement in my future.
ML Question - What's the biggest disappointment you've had in life?
Mutt Lange - The failure of my marriage with Shania.
ML Question - Will you get married again?
Mutt Lange - I'm getting too old for constant turmoil. I don't think it will take place soon, but you can't say for certain what's really going to happen.
ML Question - What's your greatest blessing?
Mutt Lange - My son.
ML Question - Do you expect the music records you produce to be massive best sellers?
Mutt Lange - No. I can tell you that most of the time your best material doesn't work with the audience. For every Come On Over or Hysteria, you have a dozen records nobody will buy. You can't explain this reality.
ML Question - Why are you so reclusive?
Mutt Lange - I've always been a private person. I don't value being in the media spotlight. I'm fortunate to be able to avoid it.
ML Question - Has music changed greatly since you started back in the 1970's?
Mutt Lange - It evolves in unpredictable ways. Some music is timeless, but some things that worked 20 or 30 years ago wouldn't interest young listeners today.
ML Question - Do websites like MuttLange.com matter to you?
Mutt Lange - I don't see the point in obsessing about my life. It's not that big of a deal. There's no hidden secrets to discover.
ML Question - Can we have a follow up interview with questions from your fans?
Mutt Lange - No. I don't see why that would be necessary. There's nothing new to learn about me.
ML Question - It's not suppose to make sense. Thanks for your time. We all hope your future is even more successful than your past although that's probably impossible and not going to happen. Your accomplishments will not be equaled or surpassed during our lifetimes.
